About Us
is a trans feminist and youth-led organization founded to build a more just and inclusive society where all gender-diverse individuals and women in their diversity are treated with dignity and equality, regardless of gender identity or expression.
Guided by feminist principles, FIL Center has grown into a dedicated team of grassroots activists committed to driving meaningful change for transgender people and women in their diversity in Uganda. Through community-led programs and advocacy, we work to advance rights, inclusion, and access to essential services for marginalized communities.

PROGRAMS

Ugandan authorities have perpetrated widespread discrimination and violence against LGBT people in the two years since the Anti-Homosexuality Act became law.

Transgender women, particularly those who are low-income or sex workers, face severe exclusion and abuse when accessing reproductive and general healthcare. Institutional bias often deters them from seeking essential services like HIV treatment due to fears of mistreatment.

Activists are developing digital platforms to safely document human rights violations and provide necessary legal and digital security

We build doors where walls used to be. Our power comes from the margins. We create our own family, our own safety, and our own future.

The obligation to take ownership of those choices. It is the mechanism that allows citizens or stakeholders to hold officials answerable for their performance.

Transgender individuals face immediate threats of mob violence, arbitrary arrests, and forced evictions. Collaboration allows organizations to coordinate emergency responses.

Every human being deserves to live with dignity, peace, and a sense of belonging. Today, we kindly invite you to open your heart to the experiences of transgender persons in Uganda.
We provide information, outreaches, guidance and community support to individuals seeking gender-affirming healthcare and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, HIV ensuring access to safe, informed, and inclusive care. Our approach focuses on reducing barriers and connecting community members to trusted and competent healthcare providers.
Our work includes facilitating referrals for HIV testing and treatment, access to broader SRH services, and support for gender-affirming care such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and consultations with endocrinologists. We prioritize linking individuals with queer-competent healthcare providers who understand and respect diverse identities.
Through education and awareness initiatives, we empower transgender individuals and LBQ women to make informed decisions about their health, rights, and overall well-being.
This program is designed to support individuals facing social and economic barriers that limit their access to employment and everyday opportunities. Through our education initiatives, we aim to strengthen practical skills and improve livelihoods.
We provide vocational training in areas such as IT programming, hairdressing, and cosmetology, equipping participants with market-relevant skills. In addition, we offer short-term English language classes (typically two months) to enhance communication abilities and increase access to education and job opportunities.
We actively advocate for the rights, safety, and dignity of LGBTQ individuals, key populations, and women in all their diversity. Our work focuses on documentation and raising awareness of urgent issues and harms affecting vulnerable communities, including discriminatory laws and policies, systemic injustices in institutions/ societies, and harmful societal norms that limit individuals from thriving in their daily lives. Our advocacy and representation efforts are carried out at multiple levels. At the grassroots, we work closely with communities to amplify voices and lived experiences. We engage with key policymakers through dialogue and strategic discussions to influence inclusive policies and practices. Additionally, we collaborate with media platforms, share real-life stories from community members, and lead public awareness campaigns that highlight the existence, resilience, and rights of marginalized groups.
We provide mentorship and leadership training that builds the capacity of human rights defenders (HRDs), women, transgender, and gender-diverse individuals to become effective and impactful leaders.
This program is designed to strengthen participants’ skills, build confidence, and enhance their advocacy abilities. Through structured training, mentorship, and peer learning, participants are empowered to lead change within their communities and contribute meaningfully to broader social transformation.
